One of the images I am holding from this past week is from the Board meeting on Tuesday evening. At the end of the evening, each person around the table chose a rock from my bowl of rocks, and spoke to it as our way of talking about ourselves and our church. It was lovely to hear people speak about the rough edges and the smoothed out places and how there is an abundance of both those things in our own lives, and in the life of our community. We heard about the colors of red, purple, brown, blue and black. We heard about the wonder of knowing that these rocks have been formed over a very long time and who knows the story of what actually brought them to this place and time? I know that a lot of people would not consider Board meetings all that "holy" - in fact, they may even do everything possible to avoid having to attend such a meeting! However, as I think back to that evening, I know that we were walking on very holy ground. They are a very faith-filled, heart-strong group of volunteers who come together once a month to work through the decisions that need to be made on behalf of our wider church community. I totally agree - there are clearly some rough edges within that decision making process - all is not smooth sailing. However, at the core of it all, each person at that table is committed to doing all that we can to live out our call to the church that God created us to be. I give thanks for all the ways that people find to offer their time and their energy towards the work of this church. So...as you move into this weekend, take a moment to find a rock - and let it speak to you about the One who created it, and about your place within whatever community grounds you and nourishes your soul.
