Last Friday night we had a family dance here at the church. The band was lively, the energy was exuberant, and the sense of community was strong. Dave Millar arrived at the dance wearing his kilt, and before long he was sitting as his table playing the spoons. He didn't make a big deal about it - he just sat there at a table near the door, and clearly enjoyed just playing along with the band. Well, Carter saw him playing - Carter is about 5 years old. He just stood there and stared - so Dave went and got him some spoons, and soon Carter was playing along. In fact, he went right up and sat beside the band and played along. And the band announced that the guest performer was Carter - on the spoons! It wasn't long until every kid there it seemed wanted to play the spoons too - some with a little more energy than others - but it was quite something to watch how it became so popular so fast. Dave didn't try to convince them to play - he just offered them spoons and they took off. This week on Sunday we will be talking a bit about leadership and how to keep the faith, even when we are not entirely sure where God is, or who it is who is leading us. Sometimes we think it is the people with the most education and the most money who will lead us. Sometimes we think it is "the church" who will lead us. This week I went and met the 3rd of the women from Rainbow Youth who have agreed to share their stories with me, so that I can then share their stories with the young moms I will be meeting in Africa. At the end of our sessions I said, "if you were to come along with me in my suitcase, what words would you want to offer the child mothers that I will be meeting in africa?". So, I carry their wise words with me as the example of how to best offer support: "remember that after every storm, the sun will shine again". "Remember that the best gift you can give is to be a good mother - trust that you are doing the best that you can for your child." "Remember that even though it is good to have people support you, you have to believe in yourself - you have to know that you CAN do this - so every morning when you get up, you need to say - today is a new day and I CAN do this for my child." Thank God for the leadership of those young moms from Rainbow Youth. And for the leadership of Dave Millar and his spoons. And for the leadership of Carter, who had the courage to just sit right up with the band and play along. Together, we can find our way to faithful living - thank God for the companions along the way!
