Often when I am preparing a sermon, there is material that I find which is interesting and I want to use, but doesn't end up fitting into the message that develops. This week, one of these pieces was part of the passage of John 14: 8-17 which included a phrase of Jesus saying that "if in my name you ask for anything, I will do it". (v14) I believe this is where we get the phrase, "in Jesus name, we pray." Yet it does not mean that by adding on this phrase to our prayer, that we will get whatever we ask for. A more accurate translation of 'in my name' would be 'in my honour'. Anything we pray for should be in honour of Jesus, the Christ. So we are being invited to consider if our prayer requests are honouring of The Christ, are they worthy of Jesus? Does this change how we might approach prayer? Honouring The Christ, seems much more meaningful and real than praying 'in Jesus' name'. I found this a very helpful reflection and am going to work at being intentional to change my language of how I end prayers, saying 'in honour of Christ', rather than 'in Jesus' name'.
